Emphasis on the extent, causes, and consequences of a number of social problems including: poverty, juvenile delinquency, family disorganization, gender inequality, and race relations. Course includes a Service Learning requirement.

The family as a social institution and the factors affecting marriage and the family are explored including gender, social class, race, ethnicity, partner selection, marital roles, work, parenting, family violence, divorce, remarriage, and stepfamilies.
