Techniques of small-boat handling, rules of the road, coastal piloting, safety at sea and small-craft sailing and maintenance. Students will complete the California Department of Boating and Waterways Safe Boating Course and obtain a Safe Boating Certificate by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators.

Theory and practical seamanship aspects of maneuvering auxiliary sailboats under power and sail during weekly sailing labs and lectures. Theory and practice of efficient sailing, anchoring, meeting emergency situations under sail and planned response to local weather conditions included.
