Units: 5
Develops basic skills in communicating in Japanese. Introduces Japanese syllabic symbols and presents general aspects of Japanese culture. This honors course will be enhanced through a research project and a presentation. Credit in either JA 1 or 1H, but not both.

The first course in second-year Japanese. Develops student skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing with increased emphasis on complex sentence structures, idiomatic expressions, mastery of 225 kanji characters, and Japanese history and culture. Conducted in Japanese.

Units: 3
Examines, analyzes and discusses central themes and topics in Japanese culture and society through the lens of Japanese animation (anime) and printed media (manga). Classes are conducted in English.
